As I reported here and here, the Department of Homeland Security’s classification of pro-life and other activities as “rightwing extremism” in a report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment,” caused an uproar a few months ago. From my April 15 post:

Citing perceived threats from internal terrorist groups, US Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano defended a politically explosive intelligence document issued by her agency, according to this April 16 The Washington Times report. Among the report’s incendiary verbiage were associations of “rightwing extremism” with opposition to abortion and immigration, as well as unfortunate linkages, without qualification, of “white supremacy” and abortion, inter-racial crimes, and same-sex marriage. From the document:

* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups),and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration. (footnote, page 2 of 9)

Prominent among these themes were the militia movement’s opposition to gun control efforts, criticism of free trade agreements (particularly those with Mexico), and highlighting perceived government infringement on civil liberties as well as white supremacists’ longstanding exploitation of social issues such as abortion, inter-racial crimes, and same-sex marriage. (page 4 of 9)

Now comes this revelation from Fox News:

An article in yesterday’s The New York Times trots out the shopworn “Church vs. State” argument on gay marriage. Although author Jeremy W. Peters and the good folks at The Gray Lady are to be to commended for inquiring into the conflicting perspectives about this issue within the religious African-American community, it is unfortunate that there is no mention of valid secular arguments against gay marriage, such as those proposed by Rev. Dr. Rob Gagnon.

But reporter and newspaper aren’t the only ones at fault. The Church usually does not talk about valid secular arguments against gay marriage, arguments which can be made using human reason and natural law. From the article,

“[NY Senate majority leader Malcolm A. Smith, who supports same-sex marriage in that State] is both a servant of God and a servant of the state,” [Rev. Floyd H.] Flake said in a telephone interview. “It’s clearly a dichotomy one does not like to be in, but it’s clearly before him now.”

The Rev. Flake, of the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral in Queens and Smith’s mentor, is to be commended for affirming biblical marriage and condemning sexual sins, and for maintaining a relationship of support and trust with Mr. Smith. I pray that Rev. Flake’s positive influence on Mr. Smith will continue.

That being said, it is sad that the generally negative Protestant opinion of human reason in the left-hand kingdom, and the divine imprint of God’s Law in creation, leaves citizens of both kingdoms victims of the “Church vs. State” argument.

I believe we can do better.

Texas Governor Rick Perry:

I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”
