Most definitely with cause. You can learn more about the suspension of Fr. Paul Vlaar, pastor of St. Victor’s in Obdam, The Netherlands, from Tom Peters at American Papist. In the meantime, watch and weep. Thankfully, no vuvuzelas.

I don't believe God is in the habit of intervening in sporting events, even if we pray hard and make the sign of the Cross at the plate. But I'm fairly certain that this is why He gave the win to Spain.

Then again, if it gets people in the door and in the pews, who's to object to altering the Mass a bit. This is probably the biggest crowd in a European church in decades. That's really what's most important, right? Attracting the unchurched? Oh, and winning, too.

Well, at least he got suspended for doing something stupid like this. Would that would happen in other places, in other churches.

"this is why He gave the win to Spain." The best comment on the whole World Cup hullabaloo.

Hey that could work for soccer in America, too! If it gets Americans into the stadium, who's to object to altering soccer a bit? Of course soccer is perfect as is, but the Mass, well….maybe it needs some adjustments to increase its appeal.
