Speaking to a supportive AFL-CIO crowd yesterday at a Labor Day picnic in Cincinnati, President Obama again emphasized his support of the “public option,” essentially a government insurance program that will compete with private insurers, which the union is on record of supporting. The question that will determine how the abortion-health care debate plays out is whether Obama merely prefers that in a bill or if he will refuse to sign legislation that does not contain it.

Obama is slated to spell out his desires and direction for Congress in a Wednesday night speech.
