Station KUOW reports that Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire signed a bill today extending the legal rights of married couples to gay and lesbian couples. Noted Gregoire,

It is time for all us here in the state of Washington to stand up and say, ‘We stand for justice. And we stand for shared responsibility to one another.’ Today is that day.

The governor’s “justice” and “shared responsibility” argument is just a form of the “equality” argument, which is currently winning the debate in our country when it comes to same-sex marriage. As mentioned here at Bioethike, valid secular arguments against same-sex marriage and even civil unions can be made among which are: 1) the natural inability of same-sex couples to reproduce, which is a chief good of society; 2) the demonstrated inability of most gay couples to remain monogomous and most lesbian couples to remain together; 3) the monstrous results of such arrangements on children, who are best served and who flourish the most in stable, heterosexual unions; 4) the havoc this will create in our legal system (think parents’ rights, wills and estates, conflicts with existing marriage laws, etc.); 5) the inevitable decline of marriage as an institution and of society in general, as proven in some European countries.

Society is based on tradition marriage. Undo traditional marriage and you undo society. Any questions?
